LOCATION 2027 - DAVOS

Davos is located in the Landwasser valley in the canton of Graubünden, around 150 km southeast of Zürich, at an altitude of 1,560 meters – making it the highest town in Europe. The Weissfluh at 2,843 meters and the Jakobshorn at 2,590 meters rise directly above the town, both reachable by cable car. In the summer, it's all about hiking on a 700 km network of trails, biking, climbing, paragliding, playing golf and swimming in Lake Davos.

The town of Davos is appealing because of its unusual history. From the mid-19th century, its clear alpine air turned it into a world-famous health resort, and the sanatoriums drew patients and artists alike: Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain is set in one of them, and the painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent the last two decades of his life here. Today Davos is just as well known as a place of science and exchange – it hosts the World Economic Forum and is home to research institutes for snow and avalanches, solar radiation and allergies. Between Belle Epoque hotels, the flat-roofed sanatorium architecture and the modern congress centre, the town has a charm entirely its own.

How to get to Davos?

Public transportation in Switzerland is extremely efficient and reaches the most remote destinations. Almost all public transit (trains, local buses, etc) are integrated in the same fare system. Trips can be planned on https://www.sbb.ch/en or via the SBB app.

From Geneva Airport (approx. 5 h 30): Take the direct InterCity to Zürich HB (about 3 hours), then continue via Landquart to Davos as described above. Connections run every half hour and involve two or three changes.

From Zürich Airport (approx. 2 h 40): Take any train to Zürich HB (10 minutes, several per hour), then a train towards Chur as far as Landquart, and from there the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) via Klosters to Davos. Connections run every half hour and involve two changes.

Davos has two railway stations: the train from Landquart stops first at Davos Dorf and then at Davos Platz – check which one is closer to your hotel. Local buses in Davos are free for hotel guests with the Davos Klosters Premium Card, which you receive at check-in.

The SBB website provides reliable directions. Transfer times may seem tight but are generally doable. Trains are punctual.

What to do in Davos

Switzerland and the area around Davos offer an infinite number of possibilities for everybody!

Here are three options:

Lake Davos
Difficulty: Easy
A relaxed walk around Lake Davos (Davosersee), always close to the shore, with views of the valley and the Graubünden mountains. About 5 km and 1 h 15 with practically no climbing, starting a few minutes from Davos Dorf station. There are picnic spots all along the way and a lido if you fancy a swim. Suitable for strollers. Weissfluhjoch – Schatzalp
Difficulty: Medium
Take the Parsenn funicular from Davos Dorf up to the Weissfluhjoch (2,660 m) and walk down the Felsenweg over the Strelapass to the Schatzalp, the former sanatorium of Magic Mountain fame, with its alpine garden and sun terrace. About 6 km and 2 h, all downhill (800 m of descent); the Schatzalp funicular takes you back to Davos Platz. More info.

Jöriseen
Difficulty: Higher
From the Wägerhus on the Flüela pass road (PostBus from Davos Dorf), climb over the Winterlücke (2,787 m) to the Jöriseen, a group of milky-green and turquoise glacier lakes below the Silvretta peaks, and return over the Jöriflüelafurgga. About 11 km and 4 h 30 with 900 m of ascent and descent – a proper alpine hike with a few short rope-secured passages, so sturdy shoes are a must. More info.

LOCATION 2025 - ENGELBERG

Engelberg is located 25 km south of Lake Lucerne in a wide mountain valley at an altitude of around 1000 meters. At 3,239 meters, Titlis mountain with its glacier, and Hahnen mountain at 2,600 meters, are towering over the surrounding peaks. In the summer, it’s all about hiking, mountaineering, climbing, biking, and playing golf.

The town of Engelberg is appealing because of its distinct and rustic character. The Benedictine monastery was founded in 1120 and has a great impact on the life of the village, even today. Monks still live, work and teach there. The homes left over from the Belle Epoque are also witnesses of that time period. In combination with the pleasant Swiss flair, the special architecture lends the village its very own charm.

How to get to Engelberg?

From Geneva Airport (approx. 4 h): Take any combination of trains to Luzern (either direct or via Olten), and then Engelberg.

From Zürich Airport (2 h 40): Take any combination of trains to Luzern (either through Olten or through Rotkreuz) and then from Luzern to Engelberg.
